Welcome to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Independent School District #113. The District consists of students from the cities of Walker, Hackensack, Akeley, and Onigum! Located three hours north west of the Twin Cities area, our area is a great place to raise a family. Featuring high bluffs, lakes, and pines throughout the area, Walker is home to over 1,000 people in northern Cass County, situated on the southern shores of Leech Lake, the third largest lake in Minnesota (over 600 miles of shoreline). Hackensack sits about 15 miles south along Hwy 371. With over 310 residents, Hackensack is located within a 10-mile radius of over 125 lakes enjoy water sports in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. Akeley is 11 miles southwest of Walker on Hwy 34. Home to over 430 residents, Akeley hosts a 25-foot statue of a kneeling Paul Bunyan next to a giant cradle.
This picturesque area is a destination to travelers all across the state and country. We offer some of the finest hunting, fishing, and water sports in the state. Hikers and bikers can enjoy the Paul Bunyan Trail (paved) that goes right through Akeley and Walker and meets with the Heartland Trail (a 49-mile paved trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake), a bicyclist paradise. All three communities also feature numerous quaint shops to browse or go out to eat. Finally, the Walker Area Community Center features a basketball court, ice rink, community weight room, and meeting rooms for the entire community to use.
Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Public School sits in the middle of Walker, featuring a Pk-12 building, enrolling over 740 students and a new Level 4 building that supports the needs of students in the region. With small class sizes, our students get the individualized attention to support their strengths and address the challenges of each individual student from a dedicated, master staff. WHA is one of only two High Reliability Schools in Minnesota to have been certified as a Level 2 School, our staff uses Dr. Robert Marzano's High Reliability Schools (HRS) framework to guide their instruction to help all students learn the content and skills they need for success in college, careers, and beyond.
As a good, fiscal steward of funds, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley is set to make key investments to address learning, student outcomes, and facilities for years to come. We encourage you to be a part of our District and come support the Wolves.
WE ARE WHA!
